Close Door Dog Training Trick Overview

The Close Door Dog Training Trick was taken from the Dog Training Planner. For those worried about your dog getting too many treats, use some of their daily food as treats so they are having some of their meal through training. You can also give just very small treats. Chopped carrot is something my dogs love as a treat, fat-free and good for them!

Break the training into 15-minute segments (anything longer than that makes it hard work for you and your dog). So, remember to keep the training sessions short.

The 7 Steps

If you scroll down a bit, you’ll see that I’ve written out all the steps from the video for you. I know. I know. I really am that nice (lol).

Videos are great if you’re a visual learner!

Most people learn dog training drills best by first watching a video tutorial, and then having the written steps available during the training session, so they don’t get confused (Hey, if you want to completely avoid confusion, you might like to get your paws on my Dog Training Planner).

Step 1: Targeting

Get a Post-It note and show it to your dog.

Every time he touches or looks at it, click your clicker and give a food treat. If your dog doesn’t show any interest in the Post-It note straight away, rub some food on it.

Step 2: Add The Cue

Don’t use the cue until the dog offers the behaviour on its own consistently.

Use the word, “Door” while moving the Post-It note towards a door and also away from the door. When your dog follows the Post-It note,  click and give a food treat.

Step 3: Move Post-It Closer

Move Post-It gradually closer to the door. When your dog follows the Post-It note, click and give a food treat. Throw the treats away from you to create distance between the door and the reward.

Step 4: Put Post-It On The Door

Put the Post-It on the door and direct him by pointing at it while saying, “Door“. When your dog follows the Post-It note, click and give a food treat. Repeat over and over.

Step 5: Open The Door

Open the door a little bit and click for even the smallest movements.

Step 6: Reward For Closing Door

Only reward when your dog closes the door.

Step 7: Remove Post-It

After doing step six many times, remove the Post-It and continue commanding your dog to close the door.

Loving Leadership

Have a philosophy of loving leadership when training your dog.

Loving Leadership Dog Training Planner

As a loving leader, you should be constantly working on the communication pathways with your dog. At the bare minimum, your dog should also have some basic commands such as the lie-down command, sit command, and stay command.

When your dog knows a few basic dog obedience commands he or she will feel loved because they know what you want and have no anxiety or fear about what they should be doing and when.

Once your dog has a few commands under his or her belt (I mean, collar), practice behaviour dog training, command dog training and tricks dog training regularly to ensure your dog is physically and mentally healthy. As you are probably acutely aware, untrained dogs have a way of taking over the control of a home if not taught otherwise (which can be a nightmare). A trained dog, however, will bring years of doggie love to your household.
